The Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony concluded with a stunning and emotional performance by Celine Dion, who sang from a platform on the Eiffel Tower. This marked her return to the stage after over a year, having canceled her Courage world tour in May 2023 due to stiff-person syndrome. This condition, which Dion disclosed in December 2022, is an autoimmune and neurological disorder that causes severe spasms and walking difficulties.
Kelly Clarkson, visibly moved by Dion’s performance, commented,
“I actually can’t talk,” and described Dion as a “vocal athlete.”
In her Prime Video documentary, “I Am: Céline Dion,” the Grammy-winning singer openly discusses her struggle with stiff-person syndrome. One particularly moving scene captures her facing a health crisis.
Earlier this week, Dion was seen greeting fans and signing autographs outside the Royal Monceau Hotel in Paris.
Here is what Celine Dion posted on X after her performance:
”I’m honored to have performed tonight, for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, and so full of joy to be back in one of my very favorite cities! Most of all, I’m so happy to be celebrating these amazing athletes, with all their stories of sacrifice and determination, pain and perseverance. All of you have been so focused on your dream, and whether or not you take home a medal, I hope that being here means that it has come true for you! You should all be so proud, we know how hard you have worked to be the best of the best. Stay focused, keep going, my heart is with you! – Celine xx…”
Lady Gaga also performed at the Opening Ceremony.
